Conventional interior permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motors face several challenging issues such as high cost and limited resources. PM-assisted synchronous reluctance motor will be an appealing alternative to eliminate the use of rare-earth magnets, which is evolved from pure synchronous reluctance motor. This paper presents the design, analysis, and experimental verification of low-cost ferrite PM-assisted synchronous reluctance motor. The theory and background of synchronous reluctance and PM-assisted synchronous reluctance motor are discussed firstly. The design and optimization of a reluctance rotor to maximize reluctance torque contribution are investigated. The proposed low-cost PM-assisted synchronous reluctance motor was manufactured and verified by experiment. Finally, the size and cost of proposed PM-assisted synchronous reluctance motor are compared to conventional rare-earth interior PM motor.
