Security in Cyber-Physical Production Systems: A Roadmap to Improving IT-Security in the Production System Lifecycle

With the current trend of introducing networking capabilities into traditional industries, Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) are increasingly targeted by cyber-attacks. Especially with the progression of introducing the industry 4.0 paradigm to sectors that until now worked with strictly sealed environments, new attack surfaces are brought to the attention of cyber-criminals that already possess high capabilities honed by attacking traditional IT-structures. Still, major mitigation strategies known from the traditional IT-world are not sufficient for industrial environments. In this work, we therefore provide an analysis of the situation starting with major changes in the industrial world by introducing networking equipment that create important security challenges for the future. Based on the identified research needs we will outline how to address them in future. The main target of this work lies in providing the right questions for researchers to provide a roadmap to improve IT in the production system lifecycle.
