This paper describes a new optical interconnect architecture andthe integrated optoelectronic circuit technology for implementing aparallel, reconfigurable, multiprocessor network. The technologyconsists of monolithic arrays of optoelectronic switches that integratevertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with three-terminalheterojunction phototransistors, which effectively combine the functionsof an optical transceiver and an optical spatial routing switch. Theseswitches have demonstrated optical switching at 200 Mb/s, andelectrical-to-optical data conversion at >500 Mb/s, with asmall-signal electrical-to-optical modulation bandwidth of ~4 GHz
