Microalgae are promising source for biodiesel and bioethanol production. Microalgae can remove the pollutants in wastewater as environmental concerns and simultaneously accumulate lipid. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate and select the high lipid-producing microalgae strains for application in wastewater treatment and production of biodiesel feedstocks. As nitrogen limitation is one important factor for lipid accumulation in microalgae, the nitrogen limitation was performed during the screening step of the microalgae. Sexteen microalgae were isolated from Songkhla Lake, Thailand and cultured in modiflied Chu 13 medium with and without nitrogen source. Among the screened, only 3 isolates gave >34% of lipid content under nitrogen limitation. Three isolates were identified as Scenedesmus sp. SPP, Chlorella sp. TWP and Chlorella sp. PPS through morphological characterization using microscopic. Among them, Scenedesmus sp. SPP, accumulated the highest lipid content of 37%, while Chlorella sp. TWP and Chlorella sp. PPS accumulated lipid content of 34-35%. The selected microalgae were cultivated in wastewater from seafood processing plant for their ability to treat wastewater and produce lipid. The biodiesel properties lipid were evaluated.
