The formation of a single bubble chain in a bubble column and the bubble breakage due to particle penetration are investigated numerically using a transient finite difference model based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method. The method uses a volume fraction function to track the motion of the gas-liquid interface. The validation of the computational results is performed by flow visualization. The computed bubble motion agrees well with the experimental results in a real time sequence. The present simulation provides the time-dependent flow field information around the bubble and the particle. It reveals the mechanisms of the bubble formation and the interactions among the gas, liquid and solid phases during the bubble-particle collision.
