摘要

Many biologists believe that the locomotory system improved during the evolution of mammals (Hildebrand, 1974; Romer, 1970). Energetically more efficient modes of locomotion with lower mileage costs are usually assumed to be among the most important results of this improvement. In this paper I have attempted to evaluate the validity of this belief by reviewing data from living vertebrates. I have taken two approaches: (I) I have considered insec-tivores and lizards as "living models" of the first mammals and compared the energetic cost of their locomotion to that of more "advanced" and "spe-cialized" cursorial mammals, and (2) I have compared the energetic cost of highly specialized modes of locomotion with the more primitive modes from which they evolved.
