Deterministic performance and loads analyses of horizontal axis wind turbines are examined using existing computer codes. The code PROPX is used for performance analysis and the codes ROTOR and FLAPX are used for loads analysis. The computer results are compared to field test data for the MOD-2, WTS-4, and the ESI-80 wind turbines. PROPX and ROTOR adequately predict the steady-state output electrical power and blade bending loads, torque, and thrust, respectively, for wind conditions within the nominal operating range of the devices. ROTOR also adequately predicts the steady-state cyclic loads. However? the codes can be improved in the areas of response to transient wind conditions and blade deformation. FLAPX predicts the loads well for some cases but cannot be used to predict the loads for turbines that have a delta-3 angle in the teeter mechanism, or turbines that have a rotor undersling. Improvement can be made by adding these effects and nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics. Response to transient wind conditions can also be added.
