Preliminary results are reported from a large study with objectives to conduct observations and experiments under real-life conditions on the nature, effects and patterns in the discourse between users and intermediary searchers and in the related computer commands in the context of online searching and responses. The study involved videotaping interactions between users and intermediaries and recording the search logs for 40 questions. Users judged the relevance of output and completed a number of other measures. Data are being analyzed both quantitatively, using standard and innovative statistical techniques, and qualitatively, through a grounded theory approach using microanalytic and observational methods. This paper is restricted to preliminary results from the qualitative analysis only. Three hypothesized stages of interaction are described: opening gambit, tactical maneuvering, and closing downdrift. As to the nature of interaction, a terminological determinant is hypothesized as the driving force behind the whole process. Several styles and tactics are described, among the most prominent being reductionism. The role of relevance feedback and magnitude feedback are also discussed. The results are offered as hypotheses about the organizational structure and the motivations underlying the search process, as derived inductively. No claims are made as to the generalizability of these observations, as hypotheses await empirical verification.
