摘要

On 9 February 1994, a severe winter storm deposited an estimated 7.5-12.5 cm of precipitation as ice across north Mississippi. Among the stands damaged in this storm were three old-field pine plantations between 40 and 50 years of age. These standshad been scheduled for experimental cutting In the summer of 1994, and had received 100-percent inventories in the fall of 1993. We quantified the damage in the stands by repeating the inventory after the storm. Ice damage was assessed using six damage categories, including (1) no damage, (2) branch breakage, (3) bending, (4) breakage within the crown, (5) breakage below live crown, and (6) uprooting. Of the 1,577 trees on the three watersheds, only 241 (15 percent) were undamaged. Undamaged trees wereprimarily small pines and hardwoods. The most severe forms of damage-broken stems and uprooting-affected 76 percent of the trees. On a percentage basis, pines were more often and more seriously damaged than hardwoods, and large trees were more often damaged than small trees. We therefore expect hardwoods to increase in importance over the next 10 years.
