In this paper the mechanisms controlling percussion drilling are investigated Experimental investigations of the damage zone around percussion drilled holes, as well as static and dynamic indentation test are used to investigate damage and fracture due to dynamic loading of brittle rocks. These experiments reveal that percussively drilled holes exhibit a very small surrounding region of damaged rock Based on damage mechanics and fracture mechanics, an analytical model has been developed.
