SOUND LEVELS ON STAGE DURING PERFORMANCES OF MUSIC SCHOOL SYMPHONY AND WIND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS

Exposure to sound of student members of music school symphony and wind symphony orchestras was tested by measuring the A-weighted equivalent and C-weighted peak sound pressure level (SPL) at eight microphone locations among musicians. Measurements were taken during three rehearsals of symphony orchestra (46 student musicians) and at two rehearsals and a concert of a wind symphony orchestra (64 student musicians). For symphony orchestra, the A-weighted equivalent SPL ranged from 80.9 to 87.7 dB. Therefore, considering the duration of rehearsals the limit value of daily noise exposure level L_(EX,8h) of 85 dB (limit value for workplaces in Poland) was not exceeded. The highest measured C-weighted peak SPL was 124.6 dB (recorded at a student playing the flute, limit is 135 dB). As expected levels measured among musicians of wind symphony orchestra were higher than that for symphony orchestra. The A-weighted equivalent SPL averaged over the duration of rehearsals or concert ranged from 91.3 to 100.1 dB for eight microphone locations on stage. This corresponded to limit value of daily noise exposure levels L_(EX,8h) exceeded in 8 (all), 5, and 6 microphone positions during rehearsal, dress rehearsal and the concert, respectively. C-weighted peak SPL ranged from 119.0 to 132.1 dB. Results of this study revealed that students playing in orchestras during their normal educational curriculum can be exposed to potentially hazardous sound levels.
