Many irrigation districts in Mexico do not have computer systems to quickly and easily graphically display the large volumes of data related to operations. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are tools that provide support to districtexecutives and managers, and user associations in the administration and visualization of information. A GIS was coupled to a soil-water balance program to represent humidity levels on a digitized map of an irrigation module, by plot. his is achieved because the soilwater balance program calculates the daily residual soil humidity and stores the information in a numerical data base. The GIS correlates the residual humidity values with the geographical data base (digitized map of module) and displays color coded maps for the numeric data (red: irrigation required; yellow: week wait; green: irrigation not required). The GIS used is the AU2-Win version by DICARTU, developed in Mexico. The advantages of the GIS AU2-Win in irrigation engineering include thegraphic visualization of the overall module and color coded images of humidity level, crop distribution, and soil series by plot.
