In spite of the fact that the first discoveries in thermoelectrics were made in the first half of the 19th century, this brunch of science is relatively young. In fact its intensive development began in the 1940s and 1950s, after L. Onsager's work on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes [1] and A. F. Ioffe's works suggesting usage of semiconductors instead of metals in thermoelectric converters [2]. The history of this stage of thermoelectrics has not yet been written, since many of those events are very recent. At the same time we must begin to write this history.
