Activation of thromboxane A_2 (TXA_2) receptors results in shape change and aggregation of platelets, and in vascular smooth muscle cells, constriction and either a mitogenic and/or a hypertrophies response. As a result of these effects, TXA_2 has been implicated as a potential pathological factor in a variety of diseases. This series of effects may be exerted through potentially different TXA_2 receptor subtypes, although their existence is still a matter of debate.
