Mg{sub}2Ni-type hydrogen storage alloy electrodes were prepared and characterised in 6M KOH solution at room temperatures to explore their potentials of application in the secondary batteries. The electrode performances of Mg{sub}2Ni-type alloys were evaluated and compared with that of LaNi{sub}5. The rate-determining step of discharge process for the Mg{sub}2Ni-type alloy electrode was dependent on the alloy compositions and depth of discharge (DOD). The unmodified Mg{sub}2Ni had a high charge transfer resistance and mass transfer resistance compared to LaNi{sub}5. The additions of yttrium and aluminium in Mg{sub}2Ni considerably reduced the both resistance which resulted in the remarkable improve inert of discharge capacity and rate-dischargeabilty.
