A FTIR matrix isolation investigation has been made for gaseous metallic carbides in equilibrium with the corresponding metal and graphite, for the systems Ge-C and Y-C. The most abundant species Ge_2C and YC_2 have been identified and their structures discussed with the help of ~(13)C isotopic substitution.
