Since its discovery in 1891, the Cripple Creek district has produced more than 653 metric tons of Au (21 M oz), making it the tod largest Auproducer in the U.S. The deposits occur within a small (18 km ) Oligocene diatreme complex that is surrounded by Proterozoic basement rocks. Within the complex is a sequence of sedimentary rocks, volcanic and hydrothermal breccias, and tuffs that are cut by alkaline igneous rocks ranging in composition from phonolite to lamprophyre, The complex formed by explosive volcanism and diatreme emplacement, followed by sedimentation and subsidence that was periodically interrupted by intrusion and breccian'on. The deposits are spatially associated with the alkaline igneous rocks; emplacement of igneous rocks and localization of ore were controlled by northwest- and northeast-trending faults.
