Optimization of Pump-and-treat Technology for Aquifer Remediation

Pump-and-treat (PAT) is an important technique for remediation of contaminated aquifers. In this technique, contaminants are removed from the aquifer with the pumped water, and then treated in treatment plants. The treated water may be supplied to some appropriate consumers or injected back into the aquifer. In order to design an PAT system efficiently, we have to use optimization approaches, since the installation and operation of an PAT system is a long and costly process. In designing of a pump-and-treat system, with optimization approaches, for groundwater and aquifer remediation, the mass removal of contaminants by pumping, cleanup time, and total cost serve as three principal system performance indices for evaluating pumping/injection alternatives. When budget and cleanup time are given, the mass removal of contaminants should be maximized as an objective. Therefore, a mass removal model is developed and solved here. Sensitivity analysis for changing budget and cleanup time are conducted to generate a flexible decision basis.
