Investigation of T-300/PR520 Out-of-Plane Laminate Properties for Resin Transfer Molding

An experimental investigation was accomplished to characterize the out-of-plane elastic and strength properties of T-300/PR520 graphite epoxy laminates fabricated using dry fabric preforms. PR520 was selected as a toughened epoxy used in emerging resin transfer molding applications. Experimental test panels were fabricated and nondestructive inspections were made using through transmission ultrasound. Matrix, fiber, and void volume fractions were determined using standard test methods. Out-of-plane tension and shear properties were experimentally determined using a recently developed draft ASTM specification and the standard v-notched beam test method, respectively. Failed specimens were examined and significant observations are discussed.
