Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is used to study the nature of titanium in titanosilicate ETS-10 molecular sieve. Reducibility of titanium in ETS-10 was studied by various reduction methods which was then compared with TS-1 molecular sieve. Dehydration at elevated temperature under vacuum generates Ti(III) ions in ETS-10, but not in TS-1. The Ti(III) centers, however, can formed both in ETS-10 and TS-1 after γ-irradiation at 77 K of activated samples. ESR parameters of Ti(III) in these two materials are distinctly different from each other and can be explained on the basis of octahedral and tetrahedral coordination of titanium in ETS-10 and TS-1, respectively. This difference is further evident from their interaction towards CO at high temperature. Adsorption of other molecules on ETS-10 does not have any significant influence on Ti(III) ion indicating that such molecules do not coordinate directly with framework titanium.
