Understanding of molecular mechnaisms of interactions between pathogen an host and isolation of genes involved in interactios are helpful basis for improving rice blast resistance. Several genes involved in defense response of rice to Magnaporthe grisea attack have been cloned and characterized. A novel lipoxygenase gene was isolated fro mrice leaves infected with M.grisea and it was suggested this gene was race-specificity related gene. HMGR may play a key role as a component of the inducible defense mechanism in rice. Other genes such as PAL and chitinase were also involved in response to pathogen attack. Significant progress ahad been achieved on rice-M.grisea interaction, however, blast resistance gene has not been cloned yet.
