The need to speed to market is pushing the engineering design threshold to new levels. Three dimensional digitizing is a common industrial method for capturing complesx surface geometry. The most widely used methods are non-contact and contact systems. Each technology comes with its own set of strengths and limitations. The common challenge is to convert the geometrical data into a format acceptable to the CAD software. CT technology proves to be one of the most effective method to reach this target, especially when the shape of the component is very complex or internal features are to be detected. More the CT scanning strategy helps to obtain in a straight-forward way STL files for Rapid Prototyping. Industrial case studies are discussed.
