Using the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process, different compositions of metal matrix composites (MMC) have been deposited on plain steel (St52), with TiC, MoS{sub}2 and iron powders. Microstructures of the MMCs obtained were studied and wear tests were carried out at room temperature, in order to assess dry lubrication properties of the deposited layers. It has been shown that there exists an optimum content of MoS{sub}2 for the composite coatings investigated, enhanced with 25-30% TiC. This content corresponds to an addition of MoS{sub}2 between 5 and 10 wt%. In this composition range and for the tribological conditions examined (alumina counterbody, 4.9-19.6N load and 30-90cm/s sliding speed) both friction coefficient and wear rate tend to a minimum.
