Life Cycle Assessment: A New Approach in the Choice of Surface Treatments

Life Cycle Assessment has become an internationally well-known technique (ISO 14040-43) to assess pollution, energy, water and raw material depletion involved at each stage in the life cycle of any product. It is generally used to prospect the ecological weight of a new product, particularly taking into account the weight and the origin of the different materials constituting it. Surface treatment processes have an important role to play in life cycle assessment too. For example, electroplating processes and other wet deposition technologies are being critically evaluated due to issues of water depletion, atmospheric pollution, toxicity and the need for expensive procedures for the treatment of waste water and sludge. Certain chemical elements, widely used in these processes, will be soon prohibited in final products or in processes. In this paper, a LCA software program linked to Impact 2002+ methodology has been used to quantify the amount of pollution involved in electroplating and in an alternative dry deposition technology: laser cladding.
