Microstructure and Wear Study of Alloyed Layers Reinforced with Boron

Mixtures of three powders (B, Cr{sub}2B and TiB{sub}2) were applied and melted on plain carbon steel and on Calmax tool steel substrates using the PTA process. All the layers produced are well-bonded to their substrates, free of cracks and porosities and much harder than their substrates. The alloyed layer produced with boron powder has a depth of about 1300μm and a hypereutectic microstructure characterized by dispersion of iron borides, Fe{sub}2B and FeB, in a eutectic matrix. The layer produced with CrB{sub}2 powder has also a hypereutectic microstructure with (Cr{sub}x, Fe{sub}(1-x)){sub}2B borides and an average depth of 1500μm. The distribution of TiB{sub}2 grains throughout the eutectic matrix characterizes the microstructure of the layer produced with TiB{sub}2 powder, with a depth between 750-1100μm, mainly depending on the composition. The wear rates of the layers produced with both boron and Cr{sub}2B powders increase with increasing sliding speed and are both of the order of 10{sup}(-15) m{sup}3/Nm. The wear rates of the coatings produced with TiB{sub}2 powders are of the order of 10{sup}(-13) to 10{sup}(-15) m{sup}3/Nm and remain unaffected from the increase of sliding speed. Almost all the produced layers present a friction coefficient increasing with the sliding distance, except for the layers with CrB{sub}2 on steel and with B on Calmax substrate which present a constant friction coefficient value equal to 0.12.
