Visual Feedback for Operator Interaction in Robotized Laser Metal Deposition

The paper presents a way of using visual feedback to facilitate for operator interaction in laser metal deposition. The metal deposition is obtained by melting metal wire and letting the solidifying metal be formed into beads. The heat source is a high power fiber laser and the beads are organized side by side and layer upon layer to form the desired shape. The beads are positioned by means of relative motion of the work piece to the laser tool and the wire feeder, both mounted on the hand of an industrial robot. The robot motion is programmed off-line to achieve necessary robot paths. The deposited metal can be either the same as the base metal or of different kind. To enable the operator to observe and control the process from a safe distance, a data acquisition and monitoring system is developed. This paper describes how the operator can use different sensor and camera information for process understanding and process development. This paper also discusses how the monitoring system can be used for manual on-line control during deposition.
