Selection of HVOF-Sprayed Metal Alloy Coatings for Corrosion and Wear Protection

A thorough comparative work was performed in order to select corrosion- and wear-resistant HVOF-sprayed metal alloy coatings, suitable for hard chrome replacement. In a first stage, the most corrosion-resistant coatings among six different compositions, namely Co-28Mo-17Cr-3Si (Tribaloy-800), Ni-17Cr-4Fe-4Si-3.5B-1C (Diamalloy-2001), Ni-20Cr-10W-9Mo-4Cu-1C-1B-1Fe (Diamalloy-4006), Ni-22Cr-9Mo-4Nb-5Fe (Inconel-625), Ni-32Mo-16Cr-3Si-2Co (Tribaloy-700) and (WC-12Co)-33Ni-9Cr-3.5Fe-2Si-2B-0.5C, were selected by electrochemical polarisation testing, free immersion tests and Corrodkote tests: Tribaloy-700 proved to be superior to hard chrome plating, Tribaloy 800 arid Diamalloy-4006 offered lower but satisfactory performances. In the second stage, the tribological properties (ball-on-disk testing) of the three selected alloys were investigated. It was also noted that a heat treatment at low temperature can modify their microstructure and tribological properties. Particularly, the Tribaloy-800 coating has particularly better wear resistance than hard chrome plating after the heat treatment. Finally, it was assessed that the heat treatment improves the corrosion resistance of Tribaloy-800 and Diamalloy-4006, whereas it slightly impairs the initially excellent performance of the Tribaloy-700 coating.
