The cryo-treatment plays an important role in improving the wear resistance of cutting tool materials. It has proved to be a promising technology for improvement of service life of traditional tool materials like HSS. Carbide inserts because of its ability of high hot hardness has become a logical choice of many cutting industries for high speed operation. However, with the incorporation of cryo-treatment, its tool life as well as its properties can be enhanced more. Although a great deal of work has been carried out in the field of cryo-treatment of cutting tool material, the real mechanisms which guarantee better tool performance are yet to be established. There is great necessity for further investigation in order to control the technique more significantly. In the present investigation cryo-treatment of HSS tools and carbide inserts have been carried out by using an indigenous technology. The improvement in flank wear resistance has been investigated. The microstructure of cryo-treated tools has been analysed using SEM and XRD analysis. An equation to determine flank wear in terms of cutting variables has been developed.
