Tantalum coatings on CoCrMo alloys for hip and knee joints substitution

A deposition of tantalum-based coating is performed on CoCrMo alloys, usually used for the substitution of hip and knee joints, in order to enhance their biocompatibility and tribological properties. In fact it is well known that artificial joints are mainly subjected to wear and corrosion that lead to toxic debris formation and metallic ion release, causing inflammatory reaction and osteolysis until to implant failure. Hence tantalum is chosen for its high biocompatibility and excellent wear and corrosion resistance. The deposition method is a thermal process in molten salts producing a thin film coating with a graded and not brittle interface. The thin coatings, presenting a thickness of about 1 μm, are characterized by a multilayer structure of tantalum carbides and/or metallic tantalum, depending on treatment temperature and substrate carbon content. Nanoscale roughness, good hardness increment and high decrement of wear and friction are revealed after coating deposition.
