Prostaglandin F secreted during the farrowing and post-farrowing plays born alive per litter in the farrowing subsequent to Lutalyse~(TM)/ Dinolytic~(TM) Sterile Solution (Lulalyse) injection of post-partum sows was increased compared fo contemporary controls. A computerized literature search identified papers and abstracts cited between 1975 and 1995 in Biological Abstracts, Derwent Drug File, VETS, Medline and PIRSU (Pharmacia & Upjohn Company) that discussed the effect of prostaglandin F in post-partum sows on number of piglets born and born alive per litter in the subsequent farrowing. Papers included in the meta-analysis describe studies designed with contemporary controls, having sows injected during 24-48 hours post-partum with 2 mL Lutalyse, and reporting the number of piglets born and born alive per litter. Most publications did not provide estimates of the variability in number of piglets born or born alive per litter; however, the data met the statistical assumptions of paired observations and the sign test provided an appropriate test of the null hypothesis. The probability of publication bias was tested using the funnel plot method. The effect of publication bias was determined by calculation of the fail-safe number.
