In order to obtain good results in artificial insemination (AI) programs, the choice of (he timing of AI is essential. There are better chances of fertilization when both masculine and feminine gametes have the highest ability to fertilize, i.e., near the moment of ovulalion. Under practical conditions, the success of AI is greatly influenced by the wide variation in the interval between weaning and onset of oestrus, in the duration of oestrus and in the inierval between the onset of oestrus and ovulation. Through ultrasonography, it is possible to evaluate the moment of ovulalion in weaned sows, which have different intervals between oestrus and moment of ovulation. It was observed that there is a relation among the moment of the onset of oestrus, oestrus duration and moment of ovulation. Females with a short weaning-oestrus interval (WEI) show longer oesirus and ovulate later as compared to females with a long WEI, which present short oestrus and ovulate early. Ovulation tends to occur after 70percent of the oestrus is manifested. This knowledge allows practical recommendations to enhance the use of AI in farms. This study aimed at evaluating the time of ovulation (TO) in a herd of a commercial farm, relating it to the duration of oestrus (DE) and to the weaning-oestrus interval (WEI).
