The going solar campaign: a collaborative approach to strengthen public awareness

For the past three years, the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) has coordinated a nation-wide, public education campaign designed to maintain a steady stream of outreach to the public and those who can reach them decision makers, community-based organizations and the media. Three sequential campaigns, under the banner of Going Solar, started in 1996. IREC has collaborated with the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) and the Utility PhotoVoltaic Group (UPVG) on these outreach efforts. This paper covers the underlying objectives and themes for these campaigns; looks at the customer classes and markets that were targeted; describes the elements - the visual, audio, and written materials and their packaging; and evaluates the results and effectiveness of this three-year effort.
