Experimental results are presented showing that applied stresses modify the transformations kinetics, the mechanical behaviour as well as the martensite morphology. These modifications are significant when the stress is larger than a threshold stress. The occurrence of a threshold stress is related to a change in the accommodation mechanism of the transformation strains, going from the formation of self-accommodating plates to accommodation by plastic slip in the parent phase. In order to further analyse the experimental results numerical simulations were performed using a 2D finite element micromechanical model. The martensite plate formation was modelled, and the choice of the plate orientation was defined considering a transformation criterion. The mechanical behaviour of the phases was considered either elastic or elasto-plastic. For no applied stress, the results show that self-accommodating arrangements are formed to relax the internal stresses whatever the mechanical behaviour. When increasing the applied stress, the occurrence of transformation strain accommodation by plastic yielding limits the role of the internal stresses, allowing favourable plate orientation. However the contribution of plastic yielding to the total deformation in the stress direction is low as compared to the deformation associated with the transformation.
