Employee, animal and public health issues associated with recirculating aquaculture systems

To date, most fish produced by aquaculture have been reared in open ponds or flow through raceways. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are an alternative method of production for many areas not readily amenable to pond or raceway techniques. RAS are a collection of devices used in the husbandry of aquatic organisms, and are analogous to swine barns or broiler houses. RAS allow multiple reuse of water within a tank system, providing high-density production in limited space. Aquacultured speciesare safe and wholesome, nevertheless since RAS are becoming a major method of fish production, a more complete understanding of possible employee, animal, and public health risks associated with RAS operations is needed. Aquatic species excrete their wastes directly into RAS, resulting in highly eutrophic systems. High culture densities and eutrophic conditions often lead to increased disease outbreaks. As a result, chemicals and chemotherapeutics are frequently used to control diseases and maintain water quality. Bacterial diseases are treated with medicated fish feeds requiring proper training of employees on how to handle, store, and dispose of unused feeds. Improper use or misuse of medicated feeds also poses unacceptable public health risks. In addition to antibiotics, strong oxidizers such as ozone, potassium permanganate, and hydrogen peroxide, and chemicals such as copper and malachite green are routinely used to reduce the buildup of organic compounds, treat and disinfect systems. Employeesoften spend extended periods of time directly in the RAS tanks harvesting fish, grading fish, repairing screens, etc., increasing their exposure to chemicals, chemotherapeutics, and pathogens.
