Chlorinated ethenes (primarily tetrachloroethene [PCE]) have been detected in groundwater beneath and downgradient of a former hydraulic pump manufacturing plant (Site) in the State of Hessen, Germany. A groundwater pump-and-treat (P&T) system operated at the Site over the past fifteen years has successfully reduced the size and strength of the area of impacted groundwater downgradient of the Site; however, the P&T system is not expected to remediate the on-site PCE source area in a reasonable timeframe. Biological enhanced in situ reductive dechlorination (ERD) has been identified as cost-effective alternative to P&T, and a prior ERD pilot test at the site found that ERD can successfully stimulate dechlorination of PCE to ethene. Given the ERD pilot test results, the regulatory authority (RP Darmstadt, Wiesbaden) approved phased implementation of a full-scale ERD system to treat the PCE source area and ultimately replace the P&T system. Termination of the P&T system is planned, pending successful performance of the Phase I ERD system.
