Background. Decades of industrial operations at a site in northeast metropolitan Denver, Colorado, USA, resulted in the release of significant quantities of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the surrounding environment. In 1981, a random sample of municipal drinking water confirmed the presence of VOCs in groundwater near the site. A water treatment plant was constructed in 1987 in order to address the affected municipal water supply. In August 1990, a five-square-mile area encompassing the site and surrounding area was placed under the regulatory authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). Initial onsite remedial efforts included the construction and operation of an air sparge and soil vapor extraction system (AS/SVE) to address contaminated soil and groundwater. After eight years of operation, the AS/SVE system was determined to be no longer effective and subsequently decommissioned. Following a period of site reassessment, modified Fenton’s reagent (MFR) technology was selected as the most feasible remedial alternative for treatment of source area VOC contamination at the site.
