Background and Objectives. Horizontal wells are widely used to reduce groundwater VOC concentrations. Numerous case studies have shown the effectiveness of horizontal wells to reduce VOC levels in groundwater. Horizontal wells may range from tens of feet to greater than 1000 feet in length and are designed to discharge air nearly uniformly along the length of screen. Well screens are typically designed through fluid dynamic calculations and occasionally field observations from successful well projects. Wells monitoring VOC concentrations and dissolved oxygen levels suggest that screen design adequately distribute air along the entire length of well screen. However, a review of established orifice discharge equations suggests significantly different discharge air flow rates than those measured in the field. The objective of this research is to isolate and study one factor of horizontal well screen design, quantifying air discharge through well screen slots.
