The cool season legumes, narrow-leaf lupin, yellow lupin, pea, chickpea and lentil have been shown to be amenable to genetic transformation using recombinant DNA and tissue culture procedures. Transformation methods for faba bean and grasspea are under development. Transgenic lupins and peas containing genes conferring herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, virus resistance or nutritional enhancement of seed protein have been evaluated in field trials in Australia and New Zealand during the last twoyears. Commercial development of some of these plants is expected within the next 3-4 years.
