Cool season food legumes are grown in most Latin American countries. Lentils, peas, chickpeas and lupins are among the most important food legumes in these countries, where they are part of the population's diet as an inexpensive source of protein. These legumes are produced mostly by small farmers who use traditional methods of cultivation and obtain only low yields. As requirements for a more competitive agriculture are increasing in Latin America, some countries have begun to mechanize the production of crops such as lentil, chickpea and lupin, thus diverting their culture to the more technically advanced farmers. The most important biotic stresses experienced in production are those caused by fungal pathogens, while abiotic constraints vary andare closely related to the local environments where the crops are grown.
