Wide crossing: opportunities and progress

Cool season food legumes (CSFLs) are increasingly being grown in marginal areas, where yield and production stability are affected by biotic and abiotic stresses to which they lack adequate resistance. Wild relatives of CSFLs possess valuable genes for resistance/tolerance to several of these stresses. Recently wide hybridization has shown potential for the genetic improvement of CSFLs. Genes for resistance to cyst nematode, and tolerance to cold have been transferred to chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)from its closest relatives. The transfer of tolerance to cold is also being pursued in lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus). Wide hybridization could play a role in improving the adaptation of CSFLs. The tertiary gene-pool (GP3) of the CSFLs includes desirable variation. Embryo-ovule culture could play a role in expanding the hybridization range of the CSFLs if this technique were refined. The superior agronomic phenotypes produced following wide hybridization in Cicer and Lens, underlines the importance ofassessing the breeding value of wild accessions in hybrid combinations with their cultivated counterparts. Collaboration is needed at the international level, between national programs, gene banks and International Agricultural Research Centers, to tackle the complexity of wide crossing systematically. This paper reviews recent progress on wide hybridization in CSFLs.
