Breeding for increased biomass and persistent crop residues in cool-season food legumes.

The impetus to breed for increased biomass and persistent crop residues in food legumes comes from the value of the straw, particularly of lentil (Lens culinaris) for livestock feeding in the Middle East, and from the inadequate quantity and quality of crop residues, especially of pea (Pisutn sativum) and lentil, for controlling erosion in thePalouse region of U.S.A. Genetic variation for biomass is broad within germplasm collections and in breeding material of food legumes and is sufficiently heritable to allow responses to selection. To date, selection for seed yield in food legumes has resulted in an indirect response in increased biomass. Crosses of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) with C. echinospermum and C. reticulatum have given segregants that are transgressive for biomass; whereas crosses of lentil withZ. culinaris ssp. orientalis have not given equivalent transgressive segregants. Quantum increases in biomass in chickpea and lentil have been achieved by altering the crop management, particularly early sowing, combined with selection for new environmental conditions. In conclusion, there is scope for rapidly increasing biomass in the cool-season food legumes; however, the quality and persistence of crop residues is largely unexplored.
