Potential for Pulses in Aquaculture Systems

Aquaculture is expanding rapidly as the demand for seafood increases and productivity intensifies using improved, formulated and cost-effective diets. Demand for fishmeal, to be used in these diets is escalating, while supply is static or declining. The shortage has resulted in a global search for alternative ingredients. Pulses have the potential to replace at least some of the fishmeal in aquaculture diets. This potential is influenced by the biochemical composition of pulses; especially their protein content, amino acid profile, carbohydrate content and profile, digestibility and biological availability to the target species, as well as their price and supply. Research indicates that pulses such as lupins, field peas and faba beans are generallywell utilised by fish. Their potential could be improved through plant breeding programs which would reduce the content of anti-nutrients and increase the essential amino acids. Processing could be used to reduce the content of poorly digested carbohydrate fractions, increase starch gelatinization and to add exogenous enzymes to assist digestion. Nutrition research within Australia has identified lupins, field peas and faba beans as having the potential to partially replace fishmeal in diets for silverperch, barramundi (sea bass), salmon and shrimp.
