Lupinus mutabilis, in its Andean highland centre of origin, has been an important source of protein for human nutrition for more than 2000 years. Today its cultivation in that region is restricted to small, farmers' fields, mostly for their own needs.The valuable seed composition, neutral photoperiodicity, non-shattering pod, large white seeds and its apparent adaptation to moderate climatic conditions made it a potential introduction to Europe. The results of a recently completed research project "Adaptation of Lupinus mutabilis to European soil and climate conditions" form the basis of this paper. The results show that, given the present plant architecture, L mutabilis will not yield sufficiently highly to be economically feasible as a crop. However, the discovery of a "determinant" mutant opens the potential, via further breeding, to produce a crop with a new architecture which might be established as a crop in Europe.
