摘要

The Asia-Pacific region represents the most diverse pulse growing area in the world. This review concentrates on the countries of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, the Peoples Republic of China, Australia and New Zealand. The major cool-season pulses, chickpeas, peas, lentils and faba beans, all play an important role here, although not to the same extent everywhere. In addition, grasspea and lupin are found in some fanning systems. The region includes economies, where production either has a focus on domestic consumption, is primarily export-oriented or where there is a balance in import-export activities. The agroecologica! differences are vast within and between the Asian-Pacific countries and pulse production methods vary from mono-cropping to inter- and mixed cropping. Trends in productivity are therefore difficult to detect. Biotic and abiotic constraints are worth considering, as both remain very important factors. Improved production technology is becoming available, but its on-farm application is still lagging as socio-economic factors often influence its adoption.
