Three economists set the global picture on Monday of the Conference and the trade scene on Tuesday. As" economists, it was difficult for them to reach the same conclusions. It was ever thus. However, the good news from my point of view was that Indianconsumers are behaving rationally and responding strongly to price. Much has been said by alarmist commentators such as Lester Brown that there is a food security problem. A number of papers went some way to dispelling that myth particularly with pulses. India has an increasing deficit between annual production and consumption of pulses. It has been a puzzle to me for some time why this is not a major issue for a population which is predominantly vegetarian. I was gratified to learn that instead, consumption of cereals and animal products such as milk and fruit and vegetables have risen strongly.
