Towards Dynamic Updating of Data Quality Information

There is now a growing realization that data quality information is not static and can change over time just like the data it represents. Not only can spatial databases be regularly updated through insertions, deletions and modifications to the dataset, but most GIS operations can readily achieve the same effects with little or no warning. Furthermore, those same operations can also allow errors and uncertainty to propagate through to the output products, and so while we may start with well-documented metadata for the input data, the fact is that we need the added capability of reporting the data quality of the derived products. As such, this paper considers both the theoretical and practical issues associated with dynamically updating data quality information for spatial databases.
