Hydraulic Head Interpolation Using Easily Available External Trend Information

When external information on trends in regionalised variables is known, incorporating this information in the analysis often pays off in decreasing the estimation error. In this study a simple, easy to handle method is sought to incorporate readily available information on drainage and groundwater withdrawal in the interpolation of hydraulic head data using kriging with an external trend (KET). Two pilot areas have been examined: one in a freely draining area and one in a controlled draining area. Both areas are subject to groundwater withdrawal. In the first area, digital elevation model (DEM) information is used as drainage trend information, while in the second area information of surface water levels is used. For the groundwater withdrawal the Thiem-Dupuit approach has been adopted. It is concluded that the used KET method can be applied successfully. Problems may arise due to lack of information close to production wells or due to heterogeneity of the study area.
