Fission fragment mass-energy distributions and gamma-ray multiplicities in multimodal fission of light thorium isotopes

The fission fragment mass-energy distributions and the gamma -rays from the multimodal fission of the ~220,224,226 Th was investigated. The corresponding excitation energies at the saddle point, E_sp, ranged from 16 to 40 MeV. As E_sp decreases, an asymmetric mass component becomes visible on the predominately symmetric mass distribution. The contribution of the asymmetric mode is characterizedby the total yield ratio Y_s/Y_a, which decreases rapidly for hte heavier isotopes of thorium. For all isotopes studied, the substracted the heavier isotopes of thorium. For all isotopes studied, the substracted asymmetric fission component, Y_a=Y_t-Y_s, exhibits a complex structure. The average gamma -ray multiplicities and relative gamma -ray energies as a function fo the mass of the fission fragments also exhibit a complex structure and strong variations. Such strong variations have never been previously observed in heavy ion-induced fusion-fission reactions. OBtaiend results may be explained with the influenceof shell effects on the properties of the fission fragments.
