This paper describes research and results of a study conducted at Kansas State University to examine the test-retestand validity characteristics of the Keirsey Temperment Sorter (KTS) personality inventory. Using universitystudents in the engineering and business programs at KSU the researchers observed statistics that demonstrate thetest-retest reliability and validity (limited) aspects of this inventory. Personality typing and the use of personalitytyping have long been part of management processes such as: team selection and development, conflict mitigation,and leadership and management training (as examples). Personality inventories are used by many types oforganizations, including: government, military, non-profits, for-profits, etc. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI) enjoys a long recognition as the tool for providing “personality typing” for such uses. However, the KTS,which is currently available on the internet for free use is sometimes touted as a “simplified version” of the MBTI.Because of this, the researchers sought to understand the test-retest and validity characteristics of the KTS as asubstitute for the MBTI. In this paper the researchers describe the approach and content of the research and resultsas well as the implications for using the KTS in engineering management applications.
