Mutagenic Action of Heavy Charged Particles: Cross Sections, RBE and Molecular Alterations

Heavy charged particles constitute an important part of cosmic radiation, and their action may thus present a substantial hazard to astronauts. There are no data on their effects in humans, so risk estimates have to be inferred from radiobiological experiments. Mutations play an essential role in carcinogenesis; knowledge of their induction probability could thus add to the fundamentals of risk assessment. We have systematically studied mutation induction by heavy ions and recently started to characterise their molecular pattern by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results are reviewed, and RBE values compared to the recent ICRP recommendations.
